What is this?

The 5s methodology revolves around organizing a work space for efficiency and effectiveness. 5s began in Japan with five words that, when translated, all began with the letter S: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke which translates roughly to Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain. Following 5s principles allows us to make sure we run an orderly shop that doesn't lose time and money to haphazard organization.

Why is it important?

Organization breeds efficiency. A cluttered space takes time to sort through and can distract a worker long enough to cause a serious safety issue or production down time. By adhering to 5S principles, we have a higher efficiency with our production, better safety performance and less downtime.
